The Plymouth University is delighted to announce the availability of 4 PhD scholarships all through their School of Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences.

Investigating Pathogenesis of Uropathogenic E Coli:

Description: This research project entails the understanding of the Uropathogenic E coli which is currently the leading sources of urinary tract infections or UTI’s. UTI’s are one of the most common infections affecting over 50% of women throughout their life time. UTI occurrences cost the general public billions in health care as well as move on to infect other areas such as the ureters, blood, and kidneys causing sepsis, pyelonephritis, and bacteremia all of which can be life threatening.

Award: Applicants wishing to be considered for these PhD scholarships will be awarded an annual stipend of £13,863 as well as full tuition waiver for domestic rates. International applicants will be responsible for covering the different in tuition rates.

Duration: The maximum duration of these PhD scholarships is for three years.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants are expected to have a master’s degree in a related subject to urology.
  • Applicants also must provide an updated CV, at least two references, and a personal statement attesting to why the applicant believes they are the suitable candidate for this PhD scholarship.

Understanding Genetics Analysis of Postpartum Psychosis:

Description: Postpartum psychosis is a very sudden occurrence of severe psychiatric instabilities that transpire within weeks after child birth. The occurrences usually cause deficiencies that cause the mother to be hospitalized. The psychosis also leads to higher risk of suicides and increased risk for danger to the child. The goal of this research project is to understand how to identify and treat the psychosis before any harm can come to the mother or child. The project is working in partnership with an ongoing study by both Birmingham and Cardiff Universities called the Bipolar Disorder Research Network. The research is shared with this project because there has been convincing evidence that the genetic factors that affect bipolar disorder also affect instances of postpartum psychosis.

Immunotherapy Using Endogenous Retroviruses:

Description: Endogenous retroviruses or ERV’s are a set of viruses that are assimilated into certain cells that compromise genome sequencing. They are normally not found in healthy cells but progressively manifest in HIV or cancer compromised cells. The topic of the research project is trying to determine if the proteins derived from these viruses are antigens to target immunotherapy methods.

Characterization of Plasmodium Signaling Network Regulating Sexual Differentiation of Malaria Parasites:

Description: The scientific community for malaria is stressing the importance of developing new drugs to fight against the plasmodium falciparum gametocytes that can transmit malaria but are not contributors to the pathogenesis. The project is going to investigate the protein signal networks that regulate the sexual development of the parasites.
