The University

The Vienna University of Technology is a public technical university situated in Vienna, Austria. The university was established in 1365 and is the oldest university of the German-speaking world. Today it is one of the largest universities in the world and is renowned for their work in Humanities. The Vienna University of Technology boasts producing 15 Nobel Prize recipients. The universities currently occupies over 60 different locations spread out through the city.

International PhD Scholarships

The Vienna University of Technology is pleased to award a maximum of 15 PhD scholarships intended for international students. These International PhD scholarships are awarded to students that possess a strong academic background, are highly competitive, and have research potential.

Value

The International PhD Scholarship awards recipients EUR 1,000 monthly to be put towards the cost of living. Tuition is not charged to candidates partaking in the PhD school.

Duration

The duration of the International PhD Scholarship is a maximum of three years. The first two years are to be spent working on course work under strict and direct supervision. The final year is to be dedicated solely to the individual’s doctoral thesis.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must be of international student status
  • The applicant must have accepted a place of study at the university
  • The applicant must show sufficient proof of proficiency in the English language
  • The applicant must be undertaking full time doctoral studies. Part time work is allowed for no more than 8 hours weekly only with supervisor approval
  • The applicant must present a research proposal as well as a personal statement explaining why they are qualified for these awards.
  • The applicant must present a summarization of their personal Master’s thesis.
  • The applicant must present at least two letters of recommendation made from academic scholars.
  • Woman who meet all eligibility requirements are specifically encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to females that meet all the requirements.
  • The PhD school as well as these PhD scholarships are highly competitive. Applicants must have excellent academics and be consistently at the top of all their classes.

How to Apply

Applicants must apply to the university and accept a place of study before they will be considered for these scholarships. The university only accepts a total of 15 PhD candidates annually and of those 15 only some of them will receive scholarships. The number of scholarships changes yearly due to budgeting.

Applicants must ensure that all required documentations are sent to the university before they will be considered for these scholarships. If the applicant is finishing their Master’s degree soon the university will wait for the final results before making a final decision.

These scholarships are highly competitive and successful candidates will be shortlisted and interviews will be set up. Domestic applicants will meet with a representative from the University for an Interview. International students are required to conduct phone interviews.

Deadline

The deadline for these scholarships is the 2nd of June. Interviews will be conducted the last full week of June and applicants will be notified if they have received a scholarship no later than the 26th of June.
