Measuring Residual Flow through Tidal Energetic Passages Using HF Radars:

Description: This project looks at how the ecosystem and environment of the North Sea is affected by the ecology and biogeochemistry of the North Atlantic. HF radar allows for adequate monitoring of the residual flow through an energetic tidal passage. The objective of the project is to use radar to collect data to be able to measure and screen residual flow.

Award: The full award is currently pending. It is understood that once the award is accepted the applicant will receive tuition fee waivers at the domestic rate as well as an annual stipend. It will be the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that they cover the difference between domestic and international tuition rates.

Duration: These PhD scholarships are intended for three years

Eligibility:

  • A master’s degree in marine physics or physical oceanography
  • The applicant should have some understanding of the radar system and how it processes data
  • The applicant has to be involved out of the Orkney campus of the Heriot-Watt University

Deadline: The program accepts applications throughout the year.

Oilfield Scales: Inorganic Scale Formations and Preventions:

Description: Scale deposits such as barium sulphate and calcium carbonate cause production problems in the oilfields because it grows on metal surfaces such as the pumping equipment and pipelines. This causes substantial limits on the fluid flow. This research project will work to understand how these formations grow and how to efficiently prevent them from growing.
