The University

The University of St. Andrews is a public research university in St. Andrews, Scotland. The University of St. Andrews was established around 1413 allowing it to be the oldest university in Scotland as well as one of the oldest in the world. The university strives for academic achievement and is ranked one of the best universities in the entire United Kingdom. The University of St. Andrews is able to boast a rich academic history with the awarding of five Nobel Laureates: One in Physiology or Medicine, one in Literature, one in Peace, and two in Chemistry.

The PhD Scholarships

The University of St. Andrews is pleased to be able to offer a variety of different research PhD scholarships. Each of these PhD scholarships is attached to an ongoing research project within the department that is offering the program. Currently the University of St. Andrews is offering PhD scholarships through their:

  • School of Chemistry
  • School of Physics and Astronomy
  • School of Psychology and Neuroscience.

Award

Each of these PhD scholarships cover tuition at the domestic tuition rate as well as offer a generous stipend of £13700 annually. International applicants are still encouraged to apply. They will have to demonstrate that they can fund the different between the domestic and the international tuition rates.

Duration

Many of these PhD scholarships are intended to last a duration of 3 to 5 years depending on the department and the research project that they are attached to.

Requirements: The applicant must have a master’s degree in a subject related to the research project that they are wishing to participate in. International applicants will be responsible for funding the tuition differences. Applicants must demonstrate a proficiency in the English language. Applicants who speak English as their second language will be required to submit language certificates. The applicant must supply at least two academic or scientific references. The applicant must supply a brief personal statement addressing their past experience and why they would benefit the ongoing research projects.

Research Projects

Below are some of the research projects that are available at the University of St. Andrews.

  • Synthesis, Characterization, and Evaluations in Devices: This is a School of Chemistry PhD project that is a 4 year studentship with the Zysman-Colman group. This group conducts research surrounding physical organic and supramolecular chemistry. The aim of the project is to design improved dyes and develop new materials for architects.
  • Large Scale Architecture of Solid State Quantum Computing: This is a School of Physics and Astronomy PhD project. This research project surrounds quantum dynamics and creating viable small scale designs for solid state quantum computing.
  • Studentships in the School of Psychology and Neuroscience: The School of Psychology and Neuroscience is currently offering three PhD scholarships. These scholarships would cover subject areas such as: Neuroscience, Human Cognition, Cognitive Neuroscience, Perception, Social Psychology, and the Origins of the Mind.
