100 Studentships

Northumbria University is pleased to announce the availability of their 100 Studentships. A studentship is essentially the same thing as PhD scholarships or other postgraduate scholarships. Studentships are awarded by different academic departments to help with the financial burden for doctoral students conducting research in one of the universities ongoing research projects. The goal of these Studentships is to attract research students to the university to continue to produce high quality research. Northumbria University offers a large variety of doctoral programs as well as research projects and offers studentships in the following faculties:

  • Engineering and Environment
  • Business and Law
  • Health and Life Sciences
  • Arts, Design, and Social Science

Studentships work the same way that PhD scholarships work except that Studentships offer recipients a more in depth, hands on approach to research by allowing the students to participate in ongoing research projects the university is conducting. Some of the following are research projects that Northumbria University is currently conducting:

  • The Immunobiology of Cystic Fibrosis-Under the supervision of Dr. J. Falconer
  • Influence of Dietary Protein Ingestion on Physiological Parameters of Recovery and Adaptation in Human Performances and Health-Under the supervision of Dr. G. Howatson
  • The Human Rights Act 1998 and the Convergence of Laws Within the UK- Under the supervision of Prof. S. Farran
  • The Regulation of Forensic Science-Under the supervision of Dr. C. McCartney

Value: These 100 Studentships, just like PhD scholarships, offer an average living allowance of £13,726 annually as well as provides full time housing and allowances for additional fees such as research expenses. Additional allowances will be decided upon by the university after all receipts and other documentation have been submitted. It is important for applicants to note that individual research projects may offer more or less benefits. In most cases tuition fees are covered and an annual allowance is available though the amounts vary.

Duration

The duration of these Studentships are three years of full time study.

Eligibility

As stated above each research project is subject to its own set of rules and recommendations. The following are basic guidelines:

  • Applicants must be able to make a positive contribution to the ongoing research projects in order to maintain their scholarships.
  • Applicants must have a strong academic background with an emphasis in research. Prior diplomas and academic transcripts will be reviewed as well as any research publication that is accredited to the applicant.
  • Applicants should present a clear research portfolio. The portfolio should demonstrate why the applicant as an individual would be a good addition to the research team.
  • Applicants are encouraged to decide on a research project to pursue as different projects have different benefits and requirements.
  • Applicants should provide at least two recommendations from academic scholars.
