7 Fully Funded International PhD Scholarships at University of Akron USA for 2014-15

The University

The University of Akron is a public research university situated in Akron, Ohio, United States. The university was established in 1870 and has since then been a competitive research university. The university is a STEM focused university. STEM stands for sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The university focuses on contributing to polymers, engineering and other advanced materials. The University of Akron sees an annual enrollment of over 27,000 students.

The PhD Scholarships

The University of Akron is pleased to announce the availability of 7 PhD scholarships. All of these PhD scholarships are offered through the Department of Polymer Engineering.

Award

Each of these PhD scholarships is fully funded. This means that the scholarships cover the full tuition fees for the domestic tuition rate as well as offer a generous stipend that ranges from $22,000 at entry level to a maximum of $35,000 (£12,838- £20,424) annually. International applicants are still eligible to apply if they can demonstrate their ability to cover the additional difference between the international and domestic tuition rates.

Duration

These PhD scholarships are intended to last for a duration of three years in a full time study session.

The Research Projects

Each of these PhD scholarships is attached to specific research projects. Recipients of these PhD scholarships are required to work on the research project that the scholarship is attached to. Below are the research projects:

  • Molecular Simulations of Carbon Nano-Fiber Composites
  • Development of the INTERFACE Force Field and Graph User Interfaces for Molecular Simulation
  • Molecular Simulations of Nano-Crystals Growth and Functions
  • Nano-Scale Model of Building Materials
  • Simulations of Corrosion Resistant Alloys
  • Nano-Meter Simulations of Layered Nano and Biomaterials
  • Simulations of Proteins Interfaces in the Bones and Teeth

Requirements for Consideration:

  • The applicant must have received upper second class or a first class honours degree, or a master’s degree in a relative degree subject to the research project they are wishing to be considered for.
  • Applicants must be able to communicate efficiently. Applicants from countries where English is not their first language will be required to submit language assessment scores as evidence of their proficiency in the English language.
  • The applicant must provide all of the contact information for at least three academic references.
  • The applicant must provide a copy of their updated CV or resume as well as provide all copies of previous academic transcripts.
  • The applicant must compose a thorough research proposal that clearly illustrates their individual research plan. The proposal should be well thought out with a solid hypothesis and an outline of the research that the applicant anticipates conducting.
  • The applicant must provide a short personal statement or essay demonstrating their motivations for their field of research and any personal issues that they have had to overcome to get to this point in their lives. They also should illustrate why they believe they are deserving of this award.

Deadline

All of these PhD scholarships have applications that can be accepted throughout the year. Once the application is submitted and the applicant is accepted they will start at the next available date.
