181 International PhD Scholarships at University of Otago New Zealand

This article is reviewing some of the scholarship opportunities at the University of Otago New Zealand.

The University

The University of Otago New Zealand is a public university located in Dunedin, New Zealand. It is the oldest functioning university within New Zealand. The university was founded in 1869 as a school associated with the University of New Zealand. The university broke apart from the University of New Zealand in 1961 becoming its own separate university. The University of Otago New Zealand sees an annual enrollment of over 21,000.

The PhD Scholarships

The University of Otago is renowned for its impressive and prestigious academic and historical record. The university is amongst the highest averaged research universities in the world. The university also is unique for being the first Australian university to allow female applicants the right to obtain a law degree.

It is for these reasons, among many more, that the university offers prestigious PhD scholarships to allow applicants from all over the world participate in doctoral studies.

Number of Scholarships

The University of Otago works to provide all deserving applicants with opportunities to continue their educations. Currently, the University of Otago is able to award 181 PhD scholarships to qualified applicants that meets all their strict requirements. These scholarships are awarded to both domestic and international applicants wishing to conduct their studies at the University of Otago.

Scholarship Award and Scholarship Duration: These scholarships are prepared to award full domestic tuition fees. International applicants are still eligible to apply for these scholarships however they will be responsible to ensuring that the additional difference between the domestic and international tuition rate is covered through other means. In addition to covering tuition costs theses PhD scholarships award an annual stipend in the amount of NZ$25,000. At these times the scholarships are not able to cover the cost of health insurance for qualified recipients. The duration of these scholarships last for a maximum of three years for full time studies. The duration varies for part time programs but usually lasts a maximum of six years.

Scholarships Requirements:

  • The perfect candidate will have to show an aptitude for research. This can be shown by previous thesis reports and other research publications that are relevant to the degree subject that the applicant wishes to be considered for.
  • Candidates must have outstanding academic records
  • Candidates for these PhD scholarships should have already been admitted into the program of study at the University of Otago.
  • Candidates may choose to conduct their studies full time or part time. Part time scholarships are available and are based on the recipient’s progress and the reason for not being able to participate in a full time program. Only strong cases for part time studies will be considered such as the applicant is a parent or suffers from disabilities.
  • Recipients of these scholarships are not permitted to be awarded other scholarships that are of equal or greater value than half of these scholarships. Grants for research, travel, and other similar grants are exempt from this requirement.
  • Scholarship applicants studying full time must not work more than 10 hours weekly outside of their programs.

Scholarship Deadline

These scholarships having a rolling admission basis with no clear deadline. Applicants are able to submit their applications at any time.
