The University

The University of Southampton is a public research university sited in Southampton, England. The university was established in 1952 and has since then been a proud founding member of the prestigious Russell Group. The University of Southampton sees an annual enrollment of over 24,000 students.

The PhD Scholarships

There are many PhD scholarships available for students studying at the University of Southampton. Currently, there are 20 PhD scholarships available for consideration at the university. These 20 PhD scholarships are distributed between four different departments at the university. The departments and research projects are listed below.

Scholarship Award

These scholarships are fully funded. This means that they cover 100% of the tuition fees for domestic applicants as well as provide an annual stipend in the amount of £13,900. International applicants are still encouraged to apply; however, they will be responsible for covering the difference between international and domestic tuition rates.

Scholarship Duration

These PhD scholarships are intended to last for a maximum duration of four years.

Requirements for PhD Consideration:

  • The applicant must have an upper second class or a first class honours degree or a master’s degree in a relative subject to the research project they are wishing to be considered for.
  • The applicant must be able to communicate efficiently. Applicants that are travelling from countries where English is not their first language will be required to submit English language assessment scores. The TOEFL or the IELTS are acceptable for this requirements.
  • Doctorate students should be prepared to conduct at least 38 hours of work weekly on the research project that they have been assigned.
  • These are highly motivated and competitive positions. Applicants must demonstrate that they can work effectively in a team setting as well as an independent source.
  • The applicant must compose a research proposal that clearly illustrates in detail the approach the applicant projects to take while performing their research.
  • The applicant must write and submit a short personal statement or essay that explains their reasoning for wanting to undertake the research or doctorate program.
  • The applicant must send all their previous academic records as well an up to date CV or resume.
  • The applicant must supply two references.
