The University

The University of St. Andrews is a research university in St. Andrews, Scotland. The University of St. Andrews was established around 1413 allowing it to be the oldest university in Scotland as well as one of the oldest in the world. The university strives for academic achievement and is ranked one of the best universities in the entire United Kingdom. Numerous programmes have received recognition for excellence. The University of St. Andrews is able to boast a rich academic history with the awarding of five Nobel Laureates: One in Physiology or Medicine, one in Literature, one in Peace, and two in Chemistry.

7th Century PhD Studentship

The University of St. Andrews is pleased to be presenting their 7th Century PhD Studentship. These PhD scholarships or studentships derived their name from the fact that the university is entering its 7th century since establishment. The university is proud of its heritage and its long standing reputation from being one of the leading research and learning universities in the world. The university will be awarding 50 of these PhD Studentships to be applied like PhD scholarships to degree programs in Science and Medicine, or Arts and Humanities.

Value

These PhD scholarships or studentships offer paid tuition fees for both domestic and international students and an annual living allowance. The allowance and tuition fees is dependent on the research programme the student becomes a part of. Due to funding some programmes can offer larger allowances.

Duration

The duration of these PhD scholarships or studentships is for a maximum of three years

Eligibility

  • The applicant must have accepted a position to study at the University of St. Andrews. Many PhD scholarships as well as PhD Studentships will not consider a candidate until they have been made an offer from the school.
  • The applicant should research the existing research areas and determine which area would better suit the applicant’s personal research proposal. With these Studentships the prospective candidate will be working with either an individual supervisor or with a whole team of supervisors at the school. It is important that the applicant finds the right advisor and applicants are encouraged to contact the school if they are having difficulties with finding a supervisor.
  • Applicants must have a strong academic background. This includes receiving high honors on all previous degrees as well as maintaining a respectable GPA. The applicant must have a Master’s Degree in their chosen area of research.
  • The applicant must show a proficiency for the English language. International applicants whose first language isn’t English will be required to submit test scores such as the IELTS or the TOEFL in order to show a basic understanding of the English language. There are some departments that have higher language requirements than others.
  • Applicants should provide at least two academic recommendations. Applicants will be asked to provide names and email addresses for their recommendations.
  • Applicants must also provide a clear and detailed research proposal as well as samples of previous academic works or publications.

Deadline

The deadlines for these studentships vary by schools. Most schools do not enforce a deadline.
