The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences is private research and education institute situated in Muizenberg, South Africa. The African Institute for Mathematical Science is the result of a collaborative partnership between the following universities: University of the Western Cape, University of Cape Town, University of Paris-Sud, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and the University of Stellenbosch. The institute was founded in 2003.

The PhD Scholarships and the PhD Fellowships

The African Institute for Mathematical Science is pleased to announce the limited availability of their PhD scholarships and PhD fellowships. AIMS or the African Institute for Mathematical Science and the Centre for Research in Computational and Applied Mechanics or CERECAM through the University of Cape Town are pleased to announced the availability of two funded PhD scholarships and an additional availability of one funded PhD fellowship. The PhD scholarships are intended to focus more on the concerns with areas such as the Subsurface Energy and Uncertainty Quantifications research but are open to all mathematical areas.

These PhD scholarships and PhD fellowships are open to South African citizens that are wishing to commence their PhD or post-doctoral research programs.

Value

These scholarships are awarding an annual stipend of R120, 000 for their PhD scholarships and anywhere between R180, 000 to R220, 000 for their post-doctoral fellowship. The amounts of the fellowship are dependent on the level of qualification and experience that the recipient has. Both the annual PhD scholarship and the PhD fellowship are tax free.

Duration: The PhD scholarships last for a maximum duration of three years while the PhD fellowship last for a maximum duration of two years.

Eligibility: The applicant must have enrolled with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and have received an offer to study in a full time doctoral or post-doctorate degree program. The applicant must have a qualifying degree in Mathematics, Engineering Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering Mathematics, or any additional degree that pertains strong math components. The applicant must have a strong educational background with an emphasis in mathematics. The applicant must be fluent in the English language. The applicant must be able to write in a scientific manner as well as understand scientific terms used in writing. The applicant must be able to work in a diverse group of their peers and must demonstrate superb communication skills. The applicant must be able to perform all the responsibilities detailed to them such as research.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit an application to the African Institute for Mathematical Science for either their PhD program or their post-doctoral program.

The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the institute receives the appropriate documentation needed to render a decision. This includes at least two letters of recommendation, the details for any citizenship or visas that the applicant currently holds, as well as all previous qualifying degrees and academic transcripts.

Deadline

The deadline for these PhD scholarships or fellowship applications is the 25th of June.
