Mitacs Accelerate is a graduate student controlled industrial internship. Mitacs is a not-for-profit national research organization. Mitacs Accelerate supports innovation by directing university research projects with a core for human wealth development.

PhD Scholarships: PhD Fellowships

The Mitacs Accelerate PhD Fellowship are intended for both Canadian and international students studying in Canada to be used as PhD scholarships or PhD fellowships. The award is given to candidates that are enrolled in a university that is in partnership with Mitacs. The Mitacs PhD scholarships allow the receivers an opportunity to study a research degree regardless of the subject area. Mitacs is in partnership with over 50 different universities throughout Canada and these PhD scholarships can be applied to any of the approved universities.

There is not a set volume of awards that are available. Each year the research council for Mitacs comes together for an annual review and determines the number of scholarships awarded. The number of PhD scholarships available depends on the amount of funding that is available for that year as well as the overall response to the program. These fellowships are not transferable and cannot be shared with another applicant.

Value

If all partnership contributions are obtained the applicant is awarded an annual living allowance of $25,000 as well as an annual research grant of $5000 to help cover the total cost of research undertaken in that year.

Duration

The maximum duration of these PhD scholarships is for three years.

Eligibility: The applicant must be a doctoral student seeking a degree with an eligible Canadian University that is in partnership with Mitacs. The applicant may be either a domestic Canadian citizen or an international student. The applicant needs to have a history of educational merit. Applicants that finished at the top of their class as well as have research publications will be given preference. The applicant must meet with their supervisors before beginning the fellowships in order to agree upon the terms of a research plan. The applicant is required to participate in a research project that supplements their degrees as well as their thesis. The applicant must maintain student status with the university that the scholarship has been awarded to. The applicant may not become an employee of any other partner agencies during the duration of the fellowship. The applicant is required to complete the full duration of the scholarship. The duration of the scholarships is three years. The applicant may not be a previous recipient of the Mitacs Accelerate Scholarships at the doctoral level. The applicant is required to complete and present a research proposal with Mitacs. The proposal needs to be clear and use proper technical terms. Mitacs requests that all proposals be submitted as a PDF file. The applicant must send in a current resume of CV. Mitacs encourages applicants to follow the template that they have available on their main website.

How to Apply

The applicant must be enrolled in one of Mitacs partner universities. Applications for the scholarship programs must be emailed.

The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the universities receive all the appropriate paperwork. The applicant must ensure that they are in compliance with the program and university terms at all times during the duration of their scholarships.

Deadline

The deadline for these PhD scholarships is the 18th of June.
